GERIATRICS & GERONTOLOGY INITIATIVE Second International Workshop

The Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) started a series of talks, discussions and debates pre-COVID, to increase awareness and sensitize health care personnel and the community about the problems with the Care of the Elderly and to initiate research in this neglected aspect of medical science
The first Workshop conducted at Baby Memorial Hospital, Kozhikode on Feb 29 & Mar 1, 2020 with active involvement of KUHS and Pallium India was well received , going by the number of participants, their interest and the feed-back. The accompanying Online Monograph was also a runaway success with ‘hits’ from as far apart as Britain, East Europe and South America. The pandemic that followed threw a spanner in the works; after a long lull, we are back to organising the annual Workshops devoted to Geriatrics and Gerontology; this year it is on 18th & 19th March, 2023.
We wanted to have a theme every year- it is ‘Cognitive Decline’ this time, since significant research is in progress in some of our institutions in Kerala- Profs. K. S Shaji and Prof. Joe Varghese take the lead here. Prof. M. R Rajagopal sheds light on Symptomatology, Prof. Ganesh Gopalakrishnan tells us about Incontinence and Dr. Syam Kumar discusses Challenges Managing Arrhythmias. Prof Alka Ganesh leads two panels, one on ‘Prescribing in the Elderly’ and another, ‘Stump the Professor’ where the audience presents difficult cases. There are more speakers sharing their experiences. We invite active participation from the House and have limited the number of talks to facilitate interaction.
